Most concrete companies make you sit through a sales visit to find out what a square foot costs. Here it is. The bigger the pour, the lower the rate — and every price includes fiber in every pour, excavation, framing, the pour and expansion joints where required. For scale: in Arabi, a 14 by 40 foot parking pad (560 sq ft) comes to about $4,060.
$1,750 minimum on the concrete. Tear-out of old concrete is a separate line item at $3.50 a sq ft with a $500 minimum. Rebar is not included; if you want it, ask your project manager to quote it. Fiber reinforcement is thousands of short synthetic fibers mixed into the concrete at the plant, so they end up spread through the entire slab — top, middle and bottom. Most concrete bids you will get in Arabi do not include it unless you ask, and most homeowners do not know to ask. We put it in every pour, patio to driveway, and it is already in our published price.
Here is why it matters so much. Concrete is at its weakest in the first hours after it is placed. In a Louisiana summer, sun, heat and wind pull water out of the surface faster than the slab can gain strength, and the top shrinks and pulls itself apart. That is where the spiderweb of fine cracks comes from — the kind you notice a few weeks after the crew is gone. Fiber holds the surface together through that window, so those shrinkage cracks mostly never form.
Wire mesh, when a crew uses it at all, has a different problem. It is supposed to sit in the middle of the slab, but it gets walked on and pushed to the bottom during the pour, where it does very little. Fiber cannot end up in the wrong place, because it is everywhere in the mix.
To be straight with you: fiber does not replace control joints or a good base, and no concrete is crack-proof. Joints still decide where concrete cracks. Fiber is what keeps the rest of the slab from cracking on its own. Want rebar on top of it for a driveway or heavy load? Ask your project manager to quote it.
